The iPhone cake and I had a very short-lived, love-hate relationship. There was a lot of anger and frustration early on. Then we made up and took lots of pictures together and posted them all over Facebook. I spent the next few days really enjoying what it had to offer, and then, just like all the others, it was gone.
But seriously…
I had some difficulty coming up with a theme for this cake. I was making it for my then-boyfriend-now husband’s birthday. I like to think I have a pretty good grasp on his interests, but none of them really stood out as ideal cake theme prospects (he hadn’t yet discovered his passion for craft beer). This cake was coming out with us to be enjoyed by some of his friends so I settled on the iPhone because I thought it would be a crowd pleaser.
Picking the apps was the fun part. Of course, I had to include the standard ones: Mail, Phone, iTunes, Safari, Clock, Weather, App Store, Camera, Messaging, Calendar, and Calculator. Then I chose some just for Kyle’s benefit: ESPN Score Center, Twitter, Words with Friends, and Facebook. Then I chose some for my benefit, mostly because I wanted to use colors I was already using, but also because I like them: Angry Birds, Groupon, Stocks, Music, and of course… “Happy Birthday Kyle”.
Since this cake was one of my earlier cakes, I was not equipped with all my fancy Wilton products yet. I used a knife to cut out all the little fondant parts. It took forever! I baked the chocolate cake right into a disposable pan so I could transport it easily. At the time, it seemed like a really good idea, but it did not make for very appealing pictures. Still worth sharing!
Side Note: It has only been 3 years since I made this, and all the apps already look so out of date. Technology is crazy!

It is going to take me forever to get my phone back to the way it was before I adjusted it solely for the purpose of this photo...
