As you may have read from my Scrap Wood Candy Corn post, I tend to hoard scrap wood from prior projects in my garage. Since I recently started giving my garage a makeover, the many, many boxes of scrap wood have been getting in my way. So I started picking out the pieces that were in pretty good shape and tossing the rest.
A few months ago, I was working on some projects that involved tree branches. I was collecting branches from my backyard and cutting them into small pieces that I could use for various reasons. So when I came across a box full of tree branch scraps during my garage cleanup, I decided to brainstorm some ideas for the pieces that would add to my Fall decor. That's how I got the idea of making mini pumpkins.

So when I came across a box full of tree branch scraps during my garage cleanup, I decided to brainstorm some ideas for the pieces that would add to my Fall decor. That's how I got the idea of making mini pumpkins.
I fished out a few pieces that were oval-shaped and could stand up on their own without rolling. I took them down to my basement craft studio and got to work. I chose an orange acrylic paint and painted a few layers on the surface of the wood. I didn't even fill in the whole face. I left an outline. Don't ask me why. I just did.
Once the face of the branches were painted, I decided they needed stems. I had some craft twigs leftover from another project. I cut them down into little pieces. Twigs from the yard would work just as well.
I used some very thin green ribbon I had to tie bows to the bottom of the twig pieces to give them a little bit of color. Then I used my hot glue gun to secure the twigs to the tops of the branch pieces.
Once my mini pumpkins were complete, I added them to the rest of my Fall decor that I just pulled out of storage.
I think they complement the other items pretty well. Another easy, free project to help decorate for the new season. Check out how they look as a part of the full display.
