Themed baby photo shoots are the best! Don't get me wrong, I love the traditional Father's Day shots with the letters D-A-D spelled out. In fact, the little one and I tried very hard to make that happen.
This was the best photo we could come up with. She kept trying to eat the letters and was getting glitter all over her hands and face. She smiles all day long but would hardly look in my direction. I knew I needed another idea.
It was three days before Father's Day and I was brainstorming ideas for the photo shoot. My husband really likes Star Wars and I thought it would be cool to somehow incorporate that into the pictures, but I was running out of time. Princess Leia came to mind because of her iconic hair. That's when I realized... Princess Leia's father is Darth Vader. How adorable would it be to do an "I Heart Vader" sign instead of the letters? Then I got the idea to draw a picture of Darth Vader instead and just let the hubby infer the rest. Genius!
So, of course, I had to come up with a Princess Leia outfit, FAST! I ended up cutting and sewing the dress out of a pillowcase. I made the wig from some velcro, felt, and yarn. Check out the tutorial here.
Once I had the outfit, I just needed to take some pictures. The great thing about a photo shoot of this nature is that all the focus is on the theme. So it's adorable no matter what. Baby won't look at the camera? No problem. Can't get a smile? So what. All she wants to do is suck her thumb? Nothing cuter than a baby Princess Leia sucking her thumb. I was golden.
I used a chalk pen to draw out the letter "I" on a small chalkboard.

The heart was a purchase from A.C. Moore.
I drew an outline of Darth Vader's mask on a larger chalkboard with the chalk pen.
Then we took about fifty photos. I picked a few of my favorites and used the Walmart website to order one hour prints. Then I put them in a nice frame and wrapped it up for Daddy. It was a huge hit! His favorite gift by far.
