More Fall decor! This post is a quick one about updating some of your current decorations to give them a more modern look. In this case, we were given a cornucopia of fake corn and gourds by hubby's mother that I thought could use a little makeover.
The cornucopia itself was a cool blackened, rust color that I thought would go well with my Fall decor. The rest just looked a little dated. The corn had a bunch of missing kernels and the gourds just didn't fit in with my bright oranges and whites. It was a great addition to our limited supply of holiday decorations, but I thought it would be even better with a twist!
So I decided to leave the cornucopia as it was and paint the items inside a nice bright white and shiny gold. I started by separating the items and began with the leaves. I knew I wanted them to be gold and I didn't think they would need any primer. So I put them in a cardboard box and sprayed them a few times on each side with Rust-Oleum Metallic Gold spray paint.
Then I did the same thing with the gourds and corn except that I sprayed a light layer of Rust-Oleum primer first. I used some paper and painter's tape to cover the tops of the corn because I knew I wanted them to be gold, and I didn't believe the primer was necessary. In fact, I am not sure the primer was necessary on any of the items. I just like to use the primer first to avoid multiple layers of regular spray paint.
Once the primer dried, I sprayed a layer of Rust-Oleum Gloss White spray paint on some of the items and the gold spray paint on the others to give them all a nice shine.
I broke out some white acrylic paint and used it to fill in the missing kernels on the corn. Then I covered up the bottom of the corn with the paper and painter's tape and sprayed the top of them gold.
As for the gourds, I decided to paint some fun patterns on them. I didn't make any fancy plans. I just started painting. I used acrylic gloss enamel metallic gold paint and the white acrylic paint.

When I was done, I arranged my newly painted objects back into the cornucopia. So cute!
Giving gifted or thrifted items a makeover is the perfect way to get the look you were searching for without much effort or cost. Instead of going out and trying to find a modern looking fall cornucopia or settling for one that didn't quite fit into my current mix, I was able to take a family item and transform it. Win-win!
